Our Accomplishments
- Non-Profit Status GrantedThe Center for Reiki Research (CRR) is the first organization dedicated to Reiki research and scientific education. On April 26th, 2019 the CRR was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
- The Touchstone ProcessThe touchstone process is a rubric for evaluation of research studies and includes a list and critical summarization of all Reiki studies published in peer reviewed journals listed in PubMed, Cochrane Collection, and Medline. The Touchstone Process is continually updated to keep it current. Research summaries are accessible with an Associate or Professional Membership with CRR.
- Reiki in Hospitals WorkshopThe CRR has produced a Reiki in Hospitals Workshop which details how to introduce, operate and maintain a Reiki program within a medical setting. There are currently over 1,000 Reiki programs in US hospitals.
- Reiki in Hospitals PresentationThe CRR created a PowerPoint presentation that explains Reiki to hospital staff. It includes a description of Reiki, how a hospital Reiki program works, its benefits to patients and hospital staff, a list of prominent hospitals that have programs and the research studies that support the therapeutic value of Reiki.
- Global Research PartnershipsThe CRR has formed a research collaboration with Reiki Medic-Care, a UK-based non-profit organization that supports the wellbeing of hospital doctors, nurses and ambulance paramedics. They provide Reiki treatments without cost from fully insured and certified practitioners who deliver Reiki remotely to fit in with busy schedules of medical professionals.

Completed Research Studies
- 1. Pragmatic Effectiveness Trial of Distance Reiki for Healthcare Workers(Dyer et al., 2023)
We completed an effectiveness trial of distance Reiki for frontline healthcare workers’ mental and physical health during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was conducted in collaboration with Reiki Medic-Care, a non-profit organization that provides distance Reiki to National Health Service healthcare professionals in the UK. The Reiki program demonstrated preliminary effectiveness for improving stress, anxiety, pain, sleep, and wellbeing in frontline healthcare workers (n = 48) impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was successfully completed, and the results are published (see below).
- 2. Largescale effectiveness trial of Reiki for psychological and physical health(Dyer et al., 2019)
We completed a pragmatic effectiveness trial (as per NCCIH recommendations) of a single Reiki session (N = 1411) on subjective health symptoms. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of Reiki in a pragmatic, real world design, as per recommendations by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. This study was successfully completed, and the results are published (see below).
- 3. Randomized controlled trial of Reiki for knee surgery(Baldwin et al., 2017)
We completed a grant-supported, rigorously designed pilot study in collaboration with Abington Memorial Hospital, a nationally recognized magnet hospital. The purpose of the study was to determine whether Reiki interventional trials were feasible in a surgical recovery environment, and whether there were discernable trends suggesting a therapeutic value of Reiki for pain and anxiety control in orthopedic patients. The study was successfully completed, and the results are published (see below).
